So you’ve got your idea nailed down inside the pages of a journal or sketchbook! Yea – congratulations! But what now ….?
Lets make it “happen” :
- What do you want to end up with? A wall hanging? A cushion cover? Journal cover? Quilt? Stitchery? Gift? Momento?
- Size is the next factor to be considered – use a ruler or tape measure and work out some basic external finished measurements. How will you display the finished object?
- Roughly draw up a plan on paper as to how you would like your composition to look, ask – does it have balance, flow and harmony, are there any obvious blank spaces that require addressing, does the picture tell a story for the viewer? Does it covey the message that I am trying to illustrate?
- Decide which technique would suit your idea best, or if there is a technique that you would like to try out?
- Use your plan to decide where to start, for instance, does the background need to be in place before any other major elements can be added?
- Start the preparation work, gathering the resources and tools – and take the first step towards the physical representation of your idea.
- Plan the order in which the composition aspects will be addressed. Roughly plan your creative sequence.
- Set your plan in action.
Be a risk taker, try something “out of your comfort zone”, enjoy the learning curve and feel the creative joy. Mistakes are not bad – they are the journey and learning curve that will help you to be closer to where you want to be in the creative process.
